Career

Jameela’s political journey began in school when she contested for a student representative post but did not win. Her real start in public service came in 1992 when she worked in literacy missions—programs that aimed to teach people to read and write. In 1995, she made her first entry into elected politics by winning the presidency of Thalakkulathur Grama Panchayat, a local village council. She had no political experience before this, but she earned people's trust by working hard for them.

Later, she held many important local government positions. From 2000 to 2005, she was the chairperson of the Welfare Standing Committee of the panchayat. Then from 2005 to 2010, she was the president of Chelannur Block Panchayat. Between 2010 and 2015, she served as the president of Kozhikode District Panchayat and again led this district body from 2019 to 2021. During her time, she started programs to help women become financially independent and improve school facilities for girls. Her focus was always on empowering women and uplifting the weaker sections of society.

Assembly Role

In 2021, Kanathil Jameela won the Kerala Legislative Assembly election from the Koyilandy constituency as the candidate of Left Democratic Front led by CPI(M). She won by a large margin of over 8,000 votes. As an MLA, she was praised for being accessible and caring deeply about her people's needs. Even after becoming a state-level leader, she maintained close contact with her constituency and continued her work for social welfare. Her journey from a homemaker to a respected leader showed her determination and dedication.

Personal Traits

Kanathil Jameela was known for being simple, cheerful, and very close to the people. Despite fighting cancer for a long time, she kept supporting and connecting with the public whenever she could. Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed deep sorrow at her passing and highlighted her role in strengthening the women's movement in the state. Jameela left behind a legacy in decentralized governance, community service, and enhancing women's rights. She is survived by her husband K. Abdurahman and their two children.

Through her sincere work and leadership, Kanathil Jameela became a role model for many, especially women from minority communities, showing them how to rise step by step and serve society at large.
