November 27, 2025: Justice Surya Kant took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24, 2025. He is the first person from Haryana to hold this high constitutional post. Justice Surya Kant started his career practicing law in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He moved to Chandigarh in 1985 to continue his practice. In July 2000, he became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana, which means he was the main lawyer for the state government.
